Join us this Thursday, February 2nd, from 14:15-15:45 hrs, German time, to hear Jan Schmutzler present his work on “Anonymisierung in Arbeit. Die testweise Aushandlung von Datenschutz in der sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung”.
How are microdata in social science research protected from re-identification? Jan introduces the practices of data protection in a social science data institute and analyses the internal testing mechanisms for maintaining data protection. What expectations and purposes do the individual testing steps serve and what is actually at stake? Using the case study of his own research with a data institute, it will be illuminated how external interventions in the existing test cascade can lead to irritations and how this was dealt with on both sides. Subsequently, differences in international comparison and hypotheses for further research in this direction will be discussed.
Jan is interested in the digital transformation of society and the ways science and technology are part of it. In his dissertation project with the working title “Protection against re-identification in the linkage of scientific data” he is investigating the threats for privacy that emerged with the ongoing trend of growing personal data-driven research and how science is handling these. He aims to understand what actors (human and non-human) participate in the privacy-related handling of research data and how their agencies come to play in concrete data practices. His goal is to facilitate the reciprocal understanding of all involved actors and their interests, in order to enable a democratic discussion about the possibilities and duties of individual-related data science.
